What does “clean IP” actually mean?

A clean IP looks like an ordinary home or mobile connection with no history of abuse. A dirty one looks like a datacenter machine or a proxy exit, or carries records of spam, mass registration or attacks committed through it.

The record belongs to the address, not to you. A shared or second-hand line keeps every previous user’s behavior in its history. That’s why a proxy that “works fine” can still fail on the platform that matters — connectivity and reputation are separate questions.

Which four signals decide it?

Platform risk systems weigh many inputs, but four signals carry most of the judgment:

  • Line type — residential and ISP lines read as real users. Datacenter and cloud IPs get stricter screening by default.
  • Proxy / VPN / Tor flags — an address recognized as a public proxy or Tor exit raises the defense level on most platforms immediately.
  • IP blacklist — public abuse databases (SpamCop, Barracuda, SORBS and others) list addresses reported for spam or attacks. A record means this IP has a documented past.
  • IP abuse risk — a 0–100 score reflecting ties to attacks, abuse and anonymous network activity. Lower is better.

How do I check my IP?

Connect through the line you want to test, then run an IP check that reads all four signals — line type, proxy flags, IP blacklist and IP abuse risk — in one pass.

The order matters: connect first, check second. Test before connecting and you’re grading your home network, not the proxy.

Checking each signal separately means one site for the ISP, another for the fraud score, a third for blacklists. The four signals describe one address; they’re easiest to judge side by side.

What IP abuse risk score counts as high?

0–33 is low, 34–66 is elevated, 67–100 is very high.

The middle band is where the other three signals decide. A residential IP scoring 40 with no flags and no IP blacklist record is usually fine. A datacenter IP at the same score is not.

My IP has a blacklist record — now what?

The listing follows the IP, not you. Switching to a clean line resolves it.

On home broadband with a dynamic IP, restarting the router usually assigns a fresh address — re-check after reconnecting. For a purchased proxy, send the check result to the provider and request a replacement.

Delisting requests to the blacklist operators exist, but they’re built for mail-server admins fixing their own infrastructure. For account work, replacing the line is faster and more reliable.

What kind of line stays clean?

Dedicated beats shared. Residential or ISP beats datacenter. A stable, verifiable location beats one that drifts.

A shared pool is only as clean as its worst user, and you inherit their record. If a provider lets you test before you commit, test — a check that fails predicts platform trouble with high confidence, even though passing one guarantees nothing.
